Here is a helpful hint to reduce the amount of paper waste sent through the mail: Sign up to reduce the amount of catalogs you receive at home by visiting http://www.catalogchoice.org/. You can sign up to take your name off of the mailing lists of any and all catalogs. It takes a week or two to process the change, but it does really work. If you receive a lot of catalogs at home, you will notice the difference in your paper waste.

Bell School is doing many things to increase recycling efforts throughout the building. All classrooms have recycling bins for paper, and there are extra bins throughout the entire school building. Students recycle juice pouches and cans in the lunchroom every day. In addition to these efforts, there is also a recycling center in the main foyer of the building where families can drop off batteries, cell phones and printer ink cartridges to be recycled. Bell School is participating in a program which offers rewards to the school for printer ink cartridges and cell phones. Please drop by the recycling center any time. |

The solar panel unit is up and running at Bell School. In December 2008, the student council organized a contest to name the solar panel unit, and the 4th graders of Room 206 won the contest with the name FRED 2009. FRED stands for Fabulous Renewable Energy Device, and you can view Fred online. There will be a school solarbration on Green Family Night in April, so watch the Bell Link for more information. If you would like to see the energy being generated by FRED 2009, please check out this link: http://view2.fatspaniel.net/PV2Web/merge?&view=PV/detailDC/HostedAdmin&eid=172263 |

This winter Ms. Chaudhri and Miss Darnell’s rooms made an effort to be “green” at their holiday parties. Room 206 set up an “evite” for the parents to help contribute supplies. The parents were able to sign up for specific items on the list so there was no excess or waste. Some of the items included a reusable tablecloth (cloth, not plastic), non-Styrofoam plates and cups, and finger foods to minimize paper or plastic packaging. The students brought their own non-breakable cups from home and took them home again. One student brought Crystal Light which was mixed in 2 quart pitchers to minimize individual drink pack waste.
